8 Weeks ago, I attended a friends graduation from Seminary school. The commencement address was delivered by the President of the UCC, United Church of Christ, Geoffrey Black. Dr. Black, with his many academic achievements in all things theological, gave what has to be the single most political commencement address ever leveled at an audience, whether they be ready for it or not. One of his political beliefs mentioned was that like it or not, global warming was real, and man kind is responsible for it. It struck me at that point in time, as I and almost exactly half of the people in the audience began rolling our eyes at being clubbed over the head with a liberal talking point, at an event where we were not in the mood for any political discourse, that this man had no business making political statements that depended entirely upon a functioning knowledge of science.  Here is a bio for Dr. Black, and I would like you to notice that it does not include a single accomplishment for anything at all related to science.

After spending 8 weeks both confused and mildly angered by Dr. Blacks substitution of politics in place of a spiritually uplifting address that he was probably asked to deliver to the graduating class of newly minted ministers, I saw a speech recently by Dr. Ivar Giaever that explained Dr. Black's transgression to me.  Global warming, or more to the point belief in man made global warming, has itself morphed into a religion.  As the leader of a church, something that has religious overtones is right in Dr. Black's wheelhouse. Never mind that any discerning scientific mind that places evidence and data above personal faith would keep investigating until the theory could be proven or disproven, it is that personal faith of its adherents that the global warming crowd find themselves comfortable with declaring the debate to be over.

Dr. Giaever by the way won a Nobel Prize in Physics for his work with super conductive materials.  He was asked some years ago to join the UN Climate Change Panel, and in 2011 resigned that post.  One reason for this is that he has always maintained that the science used to promote the global warming theory was at best junk science.  Yet, his name is always included in the lists of experts forming that, "scientific consensus," we keep hearing about.  Henrik Svensmark is in the exact same boat, and even conducted an experiment at CERN about a year ago that left the man made global warming theory completely discredited.  Undaunted however, the Church of Global Warming marches on.

One of the more poignant points made by Dr. Giaever in this speech is that the global warming crowd is pushing for policies which are causing real economic harm to actual people to combat this phenomenon which has already been proven to be a hoax.  Real famine has occurred in Egypt, and a mass uprising was the result.  Real people are starving in third world nations as we here in America are turning food into fuel through the misguided ethanol subsidy program, paid for by the way through our tax dollars.  So, as a religion, being incorporated into the mainstream of church life, it has crossed the line to becoming a religion of evil.  Under the guise of saving the planet, we are inflicting death and misery on people, who mostly remain faceless and nameless to us.  Once again, liberalism takes the unearned moral high ground while distancing itself from the inevitable disastrous results.  Just like the DDT ban that killed 50 Million people world wide so far, global warming is starving Millions, and exposing Millions more to the elements by limiting the capabilities of their shelter.

I am sure that Geoffrey Black is a fine minister and human being. It is with the direction of his faith that I disagree with, and not his qualities as a human being. The results however are the same, whether he means it in a benevolent way or as a means to perpetrate evil. Small children in a third world country are starving today as the direct result of the policies that Dr. Black is touting. whether or not he has had any influence over those policies with his role as a minister is of course open to debate. I know of at least one instance however where he had the opportunity to speak to a large crowd, and indeed admonished a group of future ministers to preach the very same message to their various flocks of congregants where ever they go. I just wish the science and theology kept themselves separated. Religion interfering with science after all has a long and terrible past. Just ask Galileo, Leibniz, and Columbus. Dr. Black should know better.

Giaever does manage to deliver one hopeful nugget of truth however. While the religious zealots are able to control the discourse concerning topics involving science on a temporary basis, eventually the truth comes out. Somewhere in the future, be it 50 years from now or 200 years from now, the weapons grade stupidity being exhibited by the proponents of man made global warming will be laughed at in just the same manner as those who told Columbus that the Earth was flat, delayed Einstein's revelations about the nature of our universe for 300 years because Leibniz was a Jew while Newton was not, and put Galileo in prison for dispelling demonstrated falsehoods about the nature of our Solar System and Universe. Too bad the people suffering the very real world effects of the global warming nonsense being incorporated into actual governing policy don't have that long.
