Romney wins Florida primary prize, Gingrich pledges drawn-out battle
From Fox News:
Mitt Romney crushed Newt Gingrich in the Florida Republican presidential primary Tuesday night, surging from a second-place finish in South Carolina to sweep the winner-take-all contest and reassert his frontrunner status.
The victory, in the biggest GOP contest to date, is likely to give the former Massachusetts governor a burst of momentum as he, Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul head west to battle in what has become an increasingly negative race.
Tonight saw Mitt Romney take a big step towards earning the Republican nomination but for those that think the race might be over don't forgot that Gingrich has come back from the ashes more than once already. While it is true that the win in Florida is a big deal it is also true that Mitt still does not satisfy the wants and needs of conservatives.
Romney took all 50 Florida delegates in the winner take all contest but the states in February and March are not winner take all so it will drag the race out as long as Gingrich stays in. Of course, the key is money. There is only one debate in February so the 'free' media is limited for Newt. He will need people to donate in large amounts to him and his superpac if he has any chance of being effective in slowing down Romney.
If Newt is to stop Romney he got off to a good start tonight with a great speech outlining some specific steps he would take on day one if elected President. For Mitt he still faces the same problem he had before with conservatives not wanting him as the nominee. For those of you that don't know Florida is not part of the old South so the vote there is not a true test of Romney's strength or lack of strength in that region.
Rick Santorum finished a distant third in Florida but along with Ron Paul vows to press on.
Nevada is the next event holding their caucus on Saturday February 4th.
